Thicker aluminum foil is better? Common packaging material misunderstanding.
Wrong. As a metal material, aluminum foil has excellent barrier properties. Normally, one would expect thicker packaging materials to provide better protection for products, but the case of aluminum foil composite is different. Thickness does not matter if the foil layer itself has no cracks or pinholes. Because aluminum foil is a kind of metal material, the natural density of its material determines its excellent barrier performance.
There is a gap between the molecules of all materials, through which gas molecules from the outer atmosphere can enter (or escape) this space. This natural concentration balance can be avoided by using barrier film and aluminum foil. That's because the molecules in aluminum foil are so dense that they can't breathe through water. In other words, no matter how thick or thin the foil is, there isn't enough clearance for water or gas molecules to enter (or spill into) the package.
So why are aluminum foil materials available in different thicknesses? There is a hidden rule here. Aluminum foil manufacturers can only guarantee that 100 ga (aluminum 25) or thicker layers are completely pinhole-free due to processing limitations. But in practice, many of the aluminum foil used in medical packaging today is less than 100 ga thick (aluminum 25).
