Aluminum Pipe Weight Chart (Optimized Version)

Aluminum Pipe Weight Formula:

W (kg/m) = π × (D − t) × t × ρ

Where:

W = weight per meter (kg/m)

D = outer diameter (mm)

t = wall thickness (mm)

ρ = density of aluminum (2.7 g/cm³ = 0.0027 kg/mm³)

Example: 20 mm × 1.5 mm Aluminum Tube

W = (20 − 1.5) × 1.5 × 0.00879
W = 18.5 × 1.5 × 0.00879
W ≈ 0.24 kg/m

FAQ

Q: What is the difference between an aluminum pipe and an aluminum tube?

A: While often used interchangeably, they are technically different. Pipe is designed for the transport of fluids and gases; thus, it is measured by its inner capacity using Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) and Schedule (wall thickness). Tube, on the other hand, is used for structural applications and is measured by exact Outside Diameter (OD) and Wall Thickness (WT).

Q: Can aluminum tubes be welded?

A: Yes, aluminum tubes are highly weldable using TIG or MIG welding processes. The 5000 and 6000 series alloys are particularly easy to weld (using 4043 or 5356 filler metals). Note that welding will naturally reduce the material's strength in the Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ).

Q: How do you calculate the cost of aluminum tubes?

A: Our pricing is fully transparent. The cost is generally calculated as: Current Aluminum Ingot Market Price (SMM) + Fabrication/Processing Premium. Surface treatments and deep fabrication will add to the processing premium.

Q: 6061 vs. 6063: Which alloy should you choose?

A: Choose 6061 if your project demands high structural strength and toughness. It has a higher yield strength, making it the industry standard for load-bearing structures, heavy-duty frames, and aerospace components.
Choose 6063 for architectural and decorative applications. It offers superior extrudability, allowing for intricate custom shapes, and boasts an excellent surface finish that is highly responsive to anodizing.

Q: Why are Seamless Tubes mandatory for high-pressure applications?

A: Standard structural tubes are manufactured using a "porthole extrusion" process, which inherently leaves micro-weld seams (seam lines) along the tube. While fine for structures, these seams can split under high internal pressure. For hydraulics, pneumatics, or pressurized gas lines, you must specify Seamless Aluminum Tubes (mandrel extruded or cold-drawn), which have no weld seams and offer a uniform, high-pressure-resistant grain structure.

Q: How to prevent aluminum tubes from cracking during bending?

A: Cracking during tube bending is a common issue caused by selecting the wrong "Temper" (hardness). If your fabrication involves CNC bending or rolling, avoid fully hardened tempers like T6. Instead, specify high-ductility tempers such as T4 or O (Annealed). You can easily form the tube first and then artificially age it to T6 to achieve maximum strength.
