1. Core characteristics and material positioning
5xxx series aluminum sheet is a rust-proof aluminum series with magnesium (Mg) as the main alloying element, which combines high strength, corrosion resistance and excellent formability45. The typical magnesium content ranges from 1.0% to 5.0%. The core performance indicators include:
Corrosion resistance: Outstanding performance in marine environment, and better seawater corrosion resistance than most aluminum alloys;
Formability: Elongation ≥ 20% (T4 state), work hardening index n value ≥ 0.27, suitable for complex processes such as deep drawing and stretching;
Weldability: Excellent welding performance, which can meet the continuous welding requirements of body structural parts (such as automobile fuel tanks).
2.Common aluminum alloy grades and performance comparison
| Grade | Magnesium Content | Tensile Strength (MPa) | Elongation (%) | Typical Applications |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5052 | 2.2–2.8% | ≥270 (T6 state) | ≥127 | Automobile fuel tanks, ship sheet metal parts, electrical housings |
| 5083 | 4.0–4.9% | ≥275 (H116 state) | ≥148 | Marine engineering structures, low-temperature pressure vessels |
| 5005 | 0.5–1.1% | ≥180 (O state) | ≥208 | Building decorative panels, vehicle interior parts |
| 5082 | 4.0–5.0% | ≥275 (O state) | ≥158 | Can lid, lightweight transport equipment group |
3.Key process characteristics
Heat treatment adaptability
Non-heat treatment type: such as 5052 and 5083, rely on cold working strengthening, suitable for scenarios where heat treatment is not required after stamping;
Annealing process: 400-450℃ annealing can eliminate residual stress and improve plasticity (such as 5083 sheet needs pre-annealing before stamping).
Surface treatment
Excellent dyeing performance after anodizing (such as 5005 aluminum sheet and 6063 profile color coordination);
Pre-degreasing treatment (alkaline cleaning agent) is required to ensure that the coating brazing rate is ≥95%.
4.Typical application areas
| Industry | Application Scenario | Applicable Grades | Performance Advantages |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automotive Industry | Fuel tanks, body panels | 5052, 5038 | High fatigue strength (5052 can reach 120 MPa) |
| Shipbuilding Engineering | Hull structure, deck | 5083, 5086 | Seawater corrosion resistance (annual corrosion rate ≤ 0.02 mm) |
| Packaging Industry | Can lids, liquid containers | 5082, 5182 | No cracks after stamping (processing ratio can reach 2.5) |
| Construction Engineering | Curtain wall panels, roof anti-skid plates | 5005, 5052 | Lightweight (density 2.68 g/cm³) + wind pressure resistance |
5.Selection recommendations
High strength requirements: 5083 aluminum plate (tensile strength ≥ 275MPa) is preferred, suitable for load-bearing structures of marine engineering; Economical and universal: 5052 aluminum plate is selected, taking into account both cost and performance (covering 80% of industrial scenarios); Precision stamping: 5182 aluminum plate (work hardening index n value >0.28) is used, suitable for multi-pass deep drawing
