Can 3003-H18 Aluminum Be Bent

May 15, 2026

No, it is highly discouraged to bend 3003-H18 aluminum. If you attempt to bend it at a standard 90-degree angle on a CNC press brake, it will almost certainly crack, fracture, or break entirely along the bend line.

Here is the technical reality of why 3003-H18 aluminum fails in bending, what the actual bending limits are, and which tempers you should be buying instead.

Why 3003-H18 Aluminum Fails in Bending

To understand why it cracks, you have to understand how we manufacture this specific temper at the rolling mill.

The 3003 alloy is an Aluminum-Manganese alloy. It is non-heat-treatable. To make it stronger, we cannot bake it in an oven. We have to physically crush it through heavy steel rollers at room temperature-a process called strain hardening (or cold working).

  • The "H1" Designation: This means the metal has been purely strain-hardened, with absolutely no thermal annealing applied to soften it afterward.
  • The "8" Designation: This stands for Full-Hard (8/8). The rolling mill applies massive pressure to compress the internal grain structure to its absolute maximum density.

Because the metal is crushed so tightly, it has zero room left to stretch. The crucial metric here is Elongation. For 3003-H18 aluminum, the elongation rate drops to a miserable 1% to 4%. When the punch of your press brake forces the outer edge of the metal to stretch around a corner, the material simply cannot comply. It micro-fractures instantly.

Bend Radius Data of 3003-H18 vs 3003-H14 Aluminum

Table 1: Bending Limits and Mechanical Properties (1.0mm - 3.0mm thickness)

Alloy Temper Tensile Strength Yield Strength Elongation Safe 90° Bend Radius Fabrication Verdict
3003-H18 Aluminum 190 – 210 MPa 170 – 186 MPa 1% – 4% 4.0t to 6.0t Terrible for sharp bending; will crack.
3003-H14 Aluminum 145 – 160 MPa 115 – 130 MPa 8% – 12% 1.0t to 1.5t Excellent for standard 90° press braking.
3003-O Aluminum 110 – 130 MPa ~ 40 MPa 20% – 30% 0t (Can fold flat) Perfect for deep drawing and extreme forming.

(Note: "t" stands for the thickness of the metal. For a 2 mm thick 3003-H18 sheet, a 4.0t radius means your bending die must have an 8 mm curved radius just to prevent cracking. This is useless for tight, square boxes.)

If You Must Bend 3003-H18 Aluminum, How Do You Do It?

While sharp 90-degree bends are out of the question, 3003-H18 can be curved if the radius is massively large.

We supply 3003-H18 aluminum coils heavily to the chemical and oil refinery industries for Thermal Insulation Jacketing. Workers use thin gauge H18 coils to wrap around massive chemical pipes. Because a pipe has a very large, gentle curve (a massive radius), the aluminum bends smoothly around it without cracking. The high surface hardness of the H18 temper ensures that the insulation jacket doesn't easily dent if a worker drops a wrench on it.

Other non-bending applications for 3003-H18 include flat highway signage, flat trailer roofs, and base plates where high wind load resistance is required and the metal remains 100% flat.

Best 3003 Aluminum Alternatives for Bending

If your application requires CNC folding, flanging, or stamping, you must step down the hardness.

  • 3003-H14 (Half-Hard): This is the industry standard for general sheet metal work. It provides enough structural rigidity to hold its shape (e.g., HVAC ductwork, appliance casings) but retains 8-12% elongation, allowing for safe, sharp 90-degree bends.
  • 3003-H24 (Partially Annealed): This is similar in strength to H14, but it has been put through a furnace to relieve internal stress. It is even more resistant to cracking on the bend line than H14.
  • Upgrade to 5052-H32: If you need the high strength of H18 (over 200 MPa) but also need to bend it 90 degrees, switch to the 5052 series. 5052-H32 offers superior tensile strength while maintaining enough ductility to survive a press brake.

FAQ

Q1: Can I heat up 3003-H18 aluminum with a torch to bend it?

A: Technically, yes, but it is a bad idea for production. Heating 3003-H18 with a torch will locally anneal the metal, softening it to the "O" temper so it can bend. However, you will permanently lose the high strength of the H18 temper in that heated area, and the heat will likely warp the sheet. Just buy the correct temper to begin with.

Q2: Will 3003-H14 aluminum crack if I bend it past 90 degrees?

A: It depends on the thickness and the tool radius. For very sharp "hemming" (bending the metal 180 degrees completely flat onto itself), even H14 might microfracture on thicker gauges. For extreme hemming or deep drawing, you should order the 3003-O (fully soft) temper.

Q3: Which is easier to laser cut, 3003-H18 or 3003-H14?

A: Both cut beautifully on modern fiber lasers. Hardness does not affect the laser's ability to melt the metal. In fact, for mechanical shearing or punching, the harder H18 often cuts cleaner, leaving a crisp edge with fewer burrs compared to softer tempers.

Q4: Will 3003-H18 aluminum rust if used outdoors as a pipe jacket?

A: No. The 3000 series is alloyed with manganese and contains virtually no iron, meaning it cannot rust like steel. It forms a natural, invisible oxide layer that prevents atmospheric corrosion, making it excellent for outdoor use without paint.
