Aluminum plate 5083 H116 VS 5083 H321

Oct 10, 2025

5083-H116 and 5083-H321 aluminum are made from the same Aluminum Alloy grade 5083. They have the same alloy composition, but they display distinct mechanical properties due to different processing (different temper).

Both the 5083-H116 and H321 grades are widely utilized in the construction of tank bodies, vehicle fuel tanks, bus body panels, shipbuilding, and so on.

We would like to examine the difference between aluminum plates 5083 H116 and 5083 H321.

H116

Applies to goods made from 5xxx series alloys with a magnesium concentration of 3% nominal or above. Products are typically strain hardened during the final operation to define stable tensile property limits and meet required levels of corrosion resistance in accelerated corrosion tests. They are appropriate for continuous use at temperatures no higher than 150°F (66°C). Corrosion testing includes intergranular and exfoliation.

H321
To attain this temper, 5083 is strain hardened and stabilized.
5083 H116 has good corrosion resistance, while H321 has stronger corrosion resistance and more consistent performance. H116 and H321 have similar mechanical qualities, and both exhibit strong corrosion resistance after coating. As far as I know, both can be utilized in ship construction; however, more mechanical properties must be provided by expert aluminum plate makers.
Aluminum Alloy 5083 is an aluminum-magnesium alloy with magnesium and tiny amounts of manganese and chromium. It is particularly resistant to attacks from seawater and industrial chemicals.

5083 H116

– Characteristics: 5083 aluminum alloy in the H116 condition is subjected to more stringent controls and typically has better corrosion resistance and strength.

– Strength: The increased strength of H116 relative to H111 makes it suitable for more demanding environments.

– Applications: Widely used in marine environments for ships and offshore structures, suitable for applications requiring high strength and corrosion resistance.

5083 H321

– Characteristics: 5083 aluminum alloy in the H321 temper has undergone special heat treatment to provide higher strength and better corrosion resistance.

– STRENGTH: Typically the strongest of the three tempers and suitable for applications in extreme environments.

– Applications: Commonly used in demanding industrial applications such as pressure vessels, ship structures and some aerospace applications.
