How Is 7075 Aluminum Heat Treated?

7075 aluminum undergoes solution heat treatment at approximately 470–490°C, followed by rapid quenching to retain a supersaturated solid solution. Artificial aging at controlled temperatures allows strengthening precipitates to form.

In the T651 temper, an additional stretching step is applied after quenching to relieve residual stress. This process enhances dimensional stability and fatigue performance.

What Is the Difference Between Solution Treatment and Aging?

Solution treatment dissolves alloying elements into the aluminum matrix, creating a uniform solid solution. Aging, on the other hand, allows controlled precipitation of strengthening phases.
