What Is 5A06 Aluminum?

5A06 aluminum is a high-magnesium, non-heat-treatable Al-Mg alloy defined under the Chinese GB/T standard. It has excellent resistance to seawater and marine atmospheres thanks to a robust passive oxide layer. Weldability is excellent using TIG or MIG processes, with joint strength reaching up to 90-95% of the base metal when suitable filler wire is used. The alloy maintains toughness at -40 degrees Celsius and below, making it suitable for cryogenic equipment. Machinability is fair to good; high speeds and proper coolant are recommended to prevent continuous chips.

Although 5A06 is metallurgically equivalent to AlMg6 and AMG6, it is most often compared to 5083 in daily trade. Both are 5xxx marine-grade alloys with excellent weldability used in shipbuilding and pressure vessels. The key difference is that 5A06 contains slightly more magnesium, up to 6.8% versus up to 4.9% for 5083, so it offers slightly higher tensile strength. However, 5083 is more universally recognized across ASTM and EN standards and holds more global marine certifications. If the highest non-heat-treatable strength is required, 5A06 is the choice; if a widely certified marine plate is needed, 5083 is an acceptable substitute in many cases with engineer approval.
