Marine Grade Aluminum Alloys Comparison Guide
Choosing the right marine-grade aluminum alloy is a common question in shipbuilding and marine fabrication. The correct answer is always: it depends on the application. Different marine components-such as hull plates, frames, stiffeners, railings, and extrusions-require different combinations of strength, formability, corrosion resistance, and weldability.
At GNEE, we typically recommend three aluminum alloys for hull plating and structural frames and two primary alloys for marine extrusions, based on long-term marine performance and fabrication experience.
Recommended Marine Aluminum Alloys by Application
For Hull Plating and Frames
5052
5083
5086
For Extrusions (Flat Bar, Tee Bar, Tubing, Railings)
6061-T6
6063-T52 / T6
Marine Grade Aluminum Alloys Comparison Table
| Aluminum Alloy & Temper | General Description | Yield Strength (psi) | Ultimate Tensile Strength (psi) | Workability | Weldability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5052-H32 | Marine-grade alloy with excellent corrosion resistance and good formability. Ideal for forming operations and suitable for freshwater or trailered boats. | 28,000 | 33,000 (12% elongation) | Fair | Good |
| 5083-H321 / H111 / H116 | High-strength, non-heat-treatable marine alloy. Maintains excellent strength in welded zones. Outstanding corrosion resistance for saltwater and freshwater use. | 33,000 | 46,000 (16% elongation) | Good | Excellent |
| 5086-H32 | Medium-to-high strength alloy with superior formability compared to 5083. Exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Widely used for boat hulls in saltwater environments. | 30,000 | 42,000 (12% elongation) | Excellent | Good |
| 6061-T6 | Marine-grade, heat-treatable alloy commonly used for stiffeners, frames, and structural components. Offers high strength, good machinability, and reliable weldability. | 40,000 | 45,000 (17% elongation) | Good | Good |
| 6063-T6 / T52 | Softer and lower strength than 6061, but highly formable with an excellent surface finish. Ideal for anodizing and curved railings, gunwales, and decorative extrusions. | 21,000 | 27,000 | Good | Good |

Important Notes on Marine Aluminum Selection
5000 Series vs 6000 Series Aluminum
In general, 5000 series aluminum alloys are primarily produced as sheet and plate, while 6000 series alloys are mainly used for extrusions. Although 6061 sheet is available, it is usually a secondary choice for hull construction.
While 6061-T6 has higher tensile strength, it has lower ductility than 5083 or 5086. This means a 6061 hull plate is more rigid and may puncture more easily under impact, whereas 5083 and 5086 provide more "give," making them safer and more reliable for hull plating.
For hull plates, 5083 and 5086 remain the best choices.
Best Alloys for Railings and Formed Components
For railings or components requiring bending, rolling, or cold forming, 6063-T6 is strongly recommended. It is more forgiving during forming and less prone to cracking. Over time (often within 12–14 months), 6063 naturally ages and approaches the mechanical behavior of 6061.
Always verify material freshness with your supplier-aged 6063 tubing becomes brittle and can crack during bending.
6061-T6: Very stiff, poor for bending, but excellent for stringers, strakes, and stiffeners
6063-T6 / T52: Ideal for formed railings and curved extrusions
6061 vs 6063 in Marine Fabrication
Long, gentle curves with supported joints → 6061 can be acceptable
Tight bends or cold forming → 6063 is the safer option
Radar masts, antenna mounts, railings → 6061 works well unless forming is required
Brackets, pad eyes, mounting plates → 6061 bar stock is easy to cut, drill, and tap
