Is aluminum 6061 corrosion resistant?

6061-T6 aluminum offers good to excellent corrosion resistance across many common environments thanks to its naturally protective oxide film, making it well-suited for use in natural and industrial settings, marine applications, and structural parts exposed to moisture. However, its performance decreases in alkaline conditions-such as those within concrete-and the presence of copper slightly reduces its corrosion resistance compared with alloys like 5052.

Self-healing oxide film: When aluminum comes into contact with oxygen, it forms a thin, protective oxide coating that automatically regenerates if damaged, helping prevent further corrosion.

Weaknesses

Reduced resistance in alkaline environments: The alloy performs poorly in highly alkaline settings-such as inside concrete-where pitting may occur.
