GNEE 5083 aluminium alloy is well known for its excellent formability, particularly in softer tempers such as O and H111. Its higher-strength variants, like H116 and H321, deliver enhanced corrosion resistance for marine environments but require more attention during bending to avoid cracking.

 

Grade 5083 aluminum plate is created with magnesium as the principal alloying element; it may contain trace amounts of chromium, manganese, silicon, iron, zinc, and other elements.

5083 is well-known for its high performance in tough and hazardous settings, making it perfect for use in industrial, chemical, and marine applications.

This grade can also retain exceptional levels of strength after welding, ensuring the maximum strength of this non-heat-treatable alloy; nevertheless, use at temperatures above 65°C is not recommended. This alloy can also be employed in cryogenic applications, as it can be cooled to -195°C without losing mechanical qualities.

Bending Characteristics by Temper

O Temper: Offers maximum ductility and is easiest to bend, making it ideal for applications that require deep drawing or complex shapes.

H111 Temper: Slightly work-hardened but still provides excellent bending performance and is suitable for precision forming.

H116 / H321 Tempers: Provide higher strength and superior corrosion resistance, commonly used in marine applications. However, they may require larger bend radii to prevent surface cracking during forming.

 

Factors Influencing Bending Performance

Thickness: Thinner sheets are easier to form and require less bending force.

Surface Finish: A smooth, clean surface helps minimize stress concentrations and reduces the risk of cracking.

Tooling and Equipment:

Properly designed tools ensure uniform force distribution during bending.

Polished or coated tooling surfaces reduce friction and help maintain the surface integrity of the aluminium.

 

Comparison with Other Aluminium Alloys

Non-Heat-Treatable Alloys:
GNEE 5083 offers higher strength than 5052 while maintaining comparable formability, making it a superior choice for demanding fabrication tasks.

Heat-Treatable Alloys:
Alloys like 6082 provide greater overall strength but are less ductile and more prone to cracking during tight bends.
