The 20x40 extruded aluminum profile can be successfully cut with a standard builder's drop saw or miter saw, making sure you have a sharp (new) fine-toothed blade and use light oil, CRC or kerosene to ensure a clean cut.
Direct and Indirect Aluminum Extrusion Processes
There are two main processes used for 20x40 extruded aluminum - direct and indirect. The direct process consists of fixing the die head and letting the moving stamped metal pass through it. On the other hand, the blank remains stationary during the indirect extrusion process. The die assembly then moves toward the blank to create pressure to force the metal through the die. Here is a more detailed look at both processes.

Direct Aluminum Extrusion Process
Direct extrusion is the most common method of extruding aluminum. An aluminum extruder places a billet (heated aluminum) into a heated, walled container. A moving punch then forces the metal through a die. During this step, very high pressures are generated.

Indirect Aluminum Extrusion Process
Indirect extrusion, often called reverse extrusion, differs from the direct process. Here, the die remains stationary while the billet and the container move simultaneously. Manufacturers use a "stem" to perform this process. The stem must be longer than the length of the container and hold the plunger in place. As a result, the aluminum billet is forced through the fixed mold.
