The minimum or basic strength of aluminum and its various alloys is determined when the metal is in the annealed or softened state. This state is often represented by the O (letter O) temper. For example, alloy 1145 aluminum paper roll is indicated as 1145-O in the annealed condition. The annealing process involves heating a metal to an appropriate temperature and holding it for a period of time.
Taking aluminum paper roll manufacturing as an example, rerolled billets are annealed prior to rolling operations for maximum processability. Rolls of household aluminum foil can also be annealed. All aluminum ingots also undergo stress hardening and strengthening during cold working processes such as foil rolling. A final annealing treatment is performed when required to keep the final product in a soft state.
Since some aluminum and its alloys can only increase their initial strength through strain hardening, heat treatment is not required. Almost all foils produced today are made from non-heat-treatable alloys that are designated as H-series according to the strain hardening conditions during fabrication. For example, a common aluminum paper roll alloy is 1145-H19, where H1 indicates strain hardening, subsequent numbers indicate the degree of hardening, and 9 indicates the fully hardened state.
