The continuous casting method has much lower energy consumption and has become the preferred process. For thicknesses below 0.025 mm (1.0 mil), it is common to put two layers together for the last pass and then separate them to produce a shiny and a matte foil. The two sides in contact with each other are matt and the outside becomes bright. This is done to reduce tearing, increase productivity, control thickness, and avoid the need for smaller diameter rollers.
