For the DC process, aluminium foil is produced by first rolling a heated aluminium ingot (hot rolled) into coils with a thickness of 2 to 4 mm and then cold rolling several passes to the desired foil thickness. For the CC process, molten metal is converted (continuously cast) directly into coils of 5-6mm gauge, which are then cold rolled to the required finished gauge.

When the foil reaches final gauge, the coils are cut to final width and coil size and then annealed in special furnaces. For many applications, the annealing of the foil is a critical step to remove all organic waste and absolutely clean food contact, and to obtain final mechanical properties for optimal operation.
