Why do some beer bottles have a foil covering on their neck?
For the same reason champagne bottles having them. The bottle must be held at the foil during opening to avoid the content being driven out by the carbon dioxide gassing out of the liquid and developing high pressure when warmed up by the hand holding the bottle at a place having no foil between bottle and hand. Today's beers do not contain so much carbon dioxide anymore.
Also, Aluminium foil at the neck of the beer bottle is called alu capsule and it is only to show that the bottle was not opened before. Once you open the bottle with an opener or any other means the aluminium capsule will be torn out and it is a clear evidence of pilferage.
