Producing Double Soft Aluminum Foil
Conventional aluminum foil production involves rolling aluminum coil through progressively narrower rolling mills to reduce the metal thickness. However, the extra cold rolling steps differentiate double soft foil manufacturing:
Thin Gauge Aluminum Sheet: Ultra-pure aluminum ingots are continuously cast into thick slabs, then hot rolled into thin coils approximately 6-12 microns thick.
Primary Cold Rolling: First cold mill reduces thickness to around 4-8 microns producing a very soft malleable sheet. Lubricants aid the reduction.
Annealing: Sheet is slowly heated and cooled to recrystallize the metal structure, relieving internal stresses from rolling.
Secondary Cold Rolling: A second cold mill further reduces thickness only slightly for extra softness. Running sheet at elevated temperatures aids plastic deformation.
Coating: Optional treatment like lacquering or laminating enhances barrier or processing properties for specific applications.
Slitting & Packaging: Sheet is slit to customer widths, coiled, and packed for shipping under static control to maintain pristine surfaces.
Proper tempering between rolling stages is essential to develop the correct microstructure for extreme ductility without compromising strength. Careful quality controls ensure consistent low gauges and a silky feel.
