Aluminium Foil in Chemistry

In chemistry, aluminum belongs to the carrier group in the periodic table. It used to belong to the earth-metal group. Aluminum is the third most common element in the earth's crust and the most common metal. Because of its reactivity, it usually only occurs in chemically bonded states. Today, aluminum foil is primarily made from pure aluminum (99-99.9% AI content). For production, the pre-rolled strip is 0.6 to 1.5 mm thick and is produced to the desired thickness through several rolling steps.

Due to forming a very thin oxide layer in the air, light aluminum foil usually has a silvery gray, dull appearance. Pure aluminum foil has an impenetrable oxide layer. Therefore, this aluminum foil is resistant to corrosion. In chemistry, the protective oxide layer can be strengthened by electrooxidation. Although aluminum foil is soft, it is also tough. Chemically, the tensile strength of pure aluminum is about 49mpa. The tensile strength of the alloy is between 300 and 700mpa.Aluminium foil can be used as a gas sampling medium. It can be wrapped around sampling probes or containers to prevent gas leakage or to facilitate controlled gas flow during sampling procedures.
